Marble Tombstones

Posted on March 6, 2010.
Marble TombstonesIs there a way to show the detail on the white marble tombstones more? If so, how?

We have a tombstone of the family who was probably 80 years or more. The print is barely perceptible. We want to darken something that will show the details without damaging the old marble. Ideas?

Check with your local master stone sculptor. There may be something you can do to darken the background, or it may not be so much again to carve the headstone so that details are deeper. You might consider erecting some sort of structure to protect it from rain and wind in order not to worsen.

There are special products that are used to the marble. Contact your local commercial cleaning product. They are in the directory in janitorial or custodial. They are always very knowledgeable and helpful.

Marble is porous, which works to your advantage - what I would do is use a paint wash (dark gray) and use it when needed. Let dry, and that is fine but it should be "spot" permanently.
