Leavenworth Christmas TrainChristmas Lighting Festival Leavenworth

Leavenworth, Washington is one of the best cities in America to live the magic of the holiday season. This Christmas Lighting Festival is one of its most popular events of the year and rightly so. Leavenworth is a Bavarian-style village of about 2,500 inhabitants in the central part of Washington state, 2.5 hours east of Seattle and the west for a half hour of Wenatchee. The city is in a beautiful alpine setting of majestic peaks of the Cascade Mountains in the background, attracting over two million visitors a year. With its Bavarian-style facades and tree lined with beautiful Christmas lights, holiday shopping, music, choirs, and sleigh rides, with snowy peaks in the background, Leavenworth is a spectacular place to visit in December.

Leavenworth Christmas Lighting Festival takes place during the first three weekends of December of each year. On Friday evening during the festival, the city is off in the dark until the arrival of the lighting of the Christmas City on Saturday night. At dusk on Saturday, visitors and residents together in a gazebo in downtown singing "Silent Night" and witness the lighting. The city is transformed into a holiday paradise. Christmas music fills the village while the children sledding in the park. You might even see Santa Claus walking in the streets and get to take a picture with him! The aroma of food and good food warm air.

Visitors should arrive at least several hours before dusk on Saturday to allow time to find parking and to participate in the festivities. Parking can be difficult to find and route 2, the main street of the city and the streets are often blocked by the visitors, including busloads of tourists. Amtrak recently began Leavenworth train service on its route between Seattle and Chicago, which may be a good option to see the festival, especially in light of the sometimes dangerous winter driving conditions in the mountains. Due to the popularity of the event, accommodation in the city must be reserved in advance.
