Acute myeloid leukemia (also known as acute myelogenous leukemia), a rapidly progressive malignant disease in which too many immature hematopoietic cells in the blood and bone marrow cells are especially those which give rise to the granulocytes or monocytes, both types of white blood cells that fight against infection. In AML, these blasts do not mature and so become too numerous. AML can occur in adults or children. In AML, the levels of red blood cells may be low, causing anemia. platelet count may be low, causing bleeding and bruising and levels of white blood cells may be low infections. The primary treatment for AML is chemotherapy. Radiation therapy is less common, it can be used in some cases, however. Bone marrow transplantation is being studied in clinical trials and is coming into increasing use.
